How do you balance academics and social life?

Achieving balance between school works and social life is probably one of the biggest challenges an individual could ever face. It feels like spending time socializing hurts your academic career and vice versa which lead to you  wishing you had more time. In truth, the real balance comes in being more efficient with the time you do have and better scheduling. These are just some tips that I learned that are effective for me (well sometimes) and might be helpful to you:

  1. Schedule your study sessions and “laag” sessions. Use “if-then” planning to build good habits. This type of planning involves using a particular situation or time of day as a trigger for schoolwork. However, it is important to have deadlines for yourself as well because using “if-then” planning alone may lead to not finishing those tasks. You’ll want to plan out your schoolwork throughout the week, as well as plan each day. Make sure that you prioritize your tasks according to their importance and due dates. Use a day planner to set up a specific block of time daily for your schoolwork. This will help you build a habit and ensure you have plenty of time to get your work done. Schedule in some fun time as well to ensure that you get a break now and then. All work and no play makes Jack the dullest student ever. Be serious about your schoolwork, but don’t forget to have fun, too. It’s okay to drop your workload for a spontaneous event or outing. Just make sure it doesn’t happen frequently. e1
  2. Stay organized and stick to your plans. Being organized will enable you to focus more on what you want to achieve, both at work and in your social life. This will allow you to make better decisions as you visualize where you are and want to go.By organizing or prioritizing what you do you can better ensure that the tasks that are crucial get more priority. It’s really simple; if you are more productive you get more done and therefore have more time. e2
  3. Avoid distractions (while studying), such as your cellphone or the internet. You don’t need to be a social media junkie to know that smartphones are addictive. Even if you stuff your phone into a drawer while studying, the slightest beep or vibration will be enough to have you digging it out and checking for missed alerts or updates. To avoid the temptation, shut down your phone completely or leave it in another room (on silent mode) when you’re tackling your schoolwork. e3
  4. Finding the right people. The people you hang out with are going to influence your study habits. During the getting-to-know-you stage, try to find students who share goals that are similar to yours. This way, you won’t be swayed to skip a study session for an all-night bash. Also, when you’re friends with your study partners, schoolwork can become a social activity. Friends who also share the same interest with you. Friends that are worth sharing the memories with. e4.jpge5.jpg
  5. Have faith in Him. No need for a long explanation on this one. The Man above is always there for us whether we are struggling or not to guide us through our journey.e6

I just showed five easy tips on how you can balance your academics and your social life but there is this one step that you can do to really balance everything: you don’t. (I kid, follow my tips)

Top 10 Fave Nickelodeon Series

Watching television is probably the most common pastime in the world and probably the most common activity that I did when I was a child and these are just ten of what made me happy as a child:

icarly.gif

iCarly

iCarly is an American teen sitcom created by Dan Schneider that ran on Nickelodeon from September 8, 2007 until November 23, 2012. The series stars Miranda Cosgrove, Jennette McCurdy and Nathan Kress, and tells the story of Carly Shay, a teenager who creates her own web show called ‘iCarly’ with her best friends Sam Puckett and Freddie Benson.Carly hosts her own home-grown web show, iCarly. She lives with her twenty-something brother/guardian, Spencer, and produces her Web casts from a makeshift third-floor loft studio. Grappling with adolescence, she never aimed to gain fame as a rising star/underground celebrity to kids. As events unfold in the pilot, it all happens by accident when a teacher puts her in charge of the school talent show. She and her sassy best bud Sam turn the audition process into a show, which Carly’s tech savvy smitten friend Freddie tapes – including their hilarious banter and great chemistry – and posts on the Web without telling the girls. The on-line audience clamors for more, and a pop phenomenon blooms, with Carly and sidekick Sam’s regular Web casts ultimately featuring everything from comedy sketches and talent contests to interviews, recipes, and problem-solving.

2. Victorious

The series follows Tori Vega, a teenager who is accepted into Hollywood Arts High School (a school for talented teens in various performing-arts fields) after taking her older, much less-talented sister Trina’s place in a showcase after Trina has an allergic reaction to a Chinese herb product designed to help make people sing better. The plot follows Tori as she finds her place within Hollywood Arts while getting into crazy situations and adventures, and meeting friends to help her along the way. Other students at Hollywood Arts, and the students who make up Tori’s group of friends, include Andre Harris, a musical prodigy who becomes Tori’s best friend at Hollywood Arts after encouraging her to stay at the school and helping her realize her talent; Robbie Shapiro, a socially awkward ventriloquist who carries around his puppet Rex Powers, who is seen by Robbie (and generally everyone else) as a living person; Jade West, a sarcastic and Gothic “mean girl” who has a complicated frenemy relationship with Tori and often threatens her; Cat Valentine, a sweet and innocent but naive and somewhat dim-witted girl; and Beck Oliver, a down-to-earth and handsome guy who is Jade’s boyfriend. They have been a couple since before the start of the series until the Season 3 episode “The Worst Couple”, but got back together in the Season 4 episode, “Tori Fixes Beck and Jade”. Beck and Tori have also had moments where they were attracted to each other (they almost kissed twice), but Tori did not want to risk her small friendship with Jade over this. Other characters include Erwin Sikowitz, the performing-arts teacher for Hollywood Arts; Lane Alexander, the school’s guidance counselor; and Sinjin Van Cleef, an odd classmate who is mostly in charge of A/V.
